I have a similar problem but with a Lexmark X6675 multifunctional device. It has been initially installed on this computer under Windows 8.0 Home 64-bit edition, and has 'survived' subsequent Windows upgrades to 8.1 and 10 without having to reinstall the driver and without any issues. After the latest Windows 10 November update it can no longer connect to the scanner. Printer can still be used but not the scanner. All scan attempts through whatever program, either timeout, or display 'Communication error' message. Tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers - didn't help. I was using the Lexmark device connected in wireless mode and I noticed that in Device Manager it was showing an exclamation sign (and error message 'Device was unable to start') under imaging devices.

I plugged it in with a USB cable, reinstalled the drivers once again, and a second device 'Lexmark 5600-6600 series' showed up in Device Manager without the exclamation mark. Still it was unable to scan. Clearly it is an issue with the Windows 10 driver compatibility because I can still use it from another computer running Windows 7 and wi-fi connection. Lexmark do not provide a newer version of drivers for this device since 2013. I'd hate to replace it, if this is what Microsoft is trying to do.

Hi: I had the exact same issues you had, after deinstalling the printer completely and removing the drivers from the system with the printui.exe via command prompt I replugged the usb cable and let windows install the printer itself. From there on I've had no issues, I even got the wifi functionality to work again:) Have you tried a complete removal and reinstall? Cheers, Henk.

Hi Henk, Sorry for late reply - I am new to the Microsoft forums, and I had checked to be notified when someone responds. Yet this notification has gone awry.

Anyway, I have tried complete removal and uninstall but not through printui.exe and then Windows default driver, but through Devices and Printers, Device Manager and then reinstall using Lexmark's original software. Before I try what you suggested, can you pls confirm if you got the scanner working too or is it only the printer working? For me the printer is OK, both via USB or WiFi but it is the scanner that I need more.
The best that it has gotten so far is that I can see it in Devices and Printers (the legacy window, not the new app), and from there I can select 'Start Scan', 'Scan profiles', 'Scan properties'. The computer is then able to send a command to the scanner as it starts working, the Preview button even shows a preview image of the scanned document, but when I try to perform the final scan, it freezes, and I can't even close that window or kill its process. After a timeout of approximately 5 minutes a message box appears with the error: 'A problem prevented the document from being scanned.
Please try again, or for troubleshooting information, see Help and Support or the information that came with the scanner.' Attempts to scan from within other applications (e.g.
Adobe Acrobat) are unsuccessful too ('Communication error') Thank you.
